Can food be grotesque? Set aside personal preferences and the idea of gross. What is a staple food in one culture may cause people from another culture to lose their cookies at the very thought. Many eastern cultures find the idea of eating cheese to be incredibly revolting while western cultures panic at the idea of chomping down on silk worm larvae.
PxlEyes has a list of the 20 most “bizarre and disturbing dishes on the planet. Of those listed, Balut, human placenta and maggot cheese probably fit the definition of grotesque better than any other.
So redefine grotesque. How about adding unhealthy? Such as ingesting 20,000 calories in under 10 minutes?
Then, there is the flat out dangerous. Fugu, puffer fish, causes several deaths in Japan every year. Hakarl is an Arctic dish made from Greenland Sharks. The sharks build up lethaltohuman levels of ammonia and trimethyl oxide in their flesh. Hanging the shark to age (and rot) is said to remove most of the poisons, but people still get sick from it. Kivaq is another Artic dish. Small birds are caught and sewn into sealskins. This is buried for up to three years. People have died from eating it.
